 Dear fellow business owner, ifyou don’t make self-care a priority then it will demand it by force.

As  I have mentioned before, I have suffered a severe illness that took over 12 months  for me to get back some semblance of normalcy. That was after sleeping sitting up for 6 months. Even now if  I am not on top of certain things regarding my health, I will not be able to function.

 Just this week a fellow female business who is a consultant, as well as a public speaker, had a sore throat. One bad enough that took her voice. She could not speak. It was so bad she started to freak out about never being able to speak again. Imagine a public speaker without a voice.

I want to emphasize that YOU are your greatest asset… Business Asset. But if you don’t take care and take steps to maintain peak performance …

Then you will be your business’ greatest LIABILITY.

 Now that can seem difficult, in fact almost impossible as a business owner. Just think about the numerous tasks and hats you  wear every day. Many times important aspects like diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management are often forgotten or seem like a luxury.  

Self-care from a holistic standpoint is the combination of specific actions to keep yourself mentally, emotionally, physically, intellectually and spiritually healthy. This is not the same for everyone. It is certainly not one size fits all kind deal. 

You  will need to create your own customized  regime of self care based on your needs and circumstances so that you can enjoy a healthy business lifestyle without the burnout.

Here are just a few  areas where you can consider adding elements to your self care support system.

Make Yourself A Priority

 If you are like most business owners, you believe if you are not working on your business 24/7, everything will come crashing down. The exact opposite is real truth as you shall soon see.

 Stop the guilt fest. Self-care is not being selfish, it is a necessity!

Block out time for self.  Your personal time with you. Treat yourself to spa, that is my favourite thing to do. You might prefer just walking in nature. It will revive you and restore your soul. Not to mention boost your creativity and feeling of well being.

Pause For A Cause

 It is critical to take regular breaks during each day. Studies suggest that even the brain needs to rest. Meaning time to wonder without tension. 

How many times have you had a problem that seems to have no solution? While going for lunch or just relaxing, the answer immediately pops into your mind. 

  Even stepping away from problems even briefly can give you a new perspective and increase your probability to solve problems. Not to mention diffuses the tension in the workspace/home office. It creates a much healthier and productive environment to work in.

Learn to say No

 You must value and guard your time. 

You have 24 hours like everyone else and must use it wisely to be successful. One thing that takes away from productivity is distraction. It comes under the umbrella of lost time. This is the time not used to move your bottom line of your business.

 Now social media is an amazing tool for increasing awareness and building relationships, but if not used with discipline can be a terrible time suck.

Another major distraction is agreeing to requests without consideration of the demand on your time and resources.

You have to learn to say no to a lot of things in order to focus on the things that are really important now and longterm.

  Eat Healthily. Eat Smart.

 Eating on the go can be a challenge if you don’t prepare for it.  Know your schedule and prep healthy quick meals.

I love sites like Delish.com that give a variety of recipes for every taste bud and diet plan.   You can easily prepare healthy meals for the entire week. 

Ensure that you have a stock of ready to eat, grab n go healthy snacks available. Make sure you have access to it at home, in the car, in your purse, your drawer at your work desk and so on.

Using that approach will reduce the need to buy fast foods that are always strategically located and visible. It is much easier than you think. It will also be lighter on your pocket.

 Meditate each day

 It is necessary to feed your spirit and stay grounded. Praying and ensuring that your relationship with the Creator is essential in this journey called life. As it is said, if the vertical relationship is not right, then nothing else will be right.

You even see this with rich people, people who on the surface have everything but are unhappy and empty. They continuously search for purpose and significance. It can only be filled with his spirit.

Spirituality is one of the key pillars to having a full human experience and living the Rich Life.

 As business owners, our minds are always buzzing with ideas for new projects or solving problems and thoughts go a trillion a second.  To the point that sometimes we have problems sleeping which we shall touch on a bit later.

 It is a very good practice to get your ideas all on paper and clear your mind. Even journaling about your feelings can bring immense relief. It can also reduce the feeling of overwhelm as you see that there is a method to the madness.

  Your business has different types of tasks with varying levels of urgency and importance. The number priority is the income generating activity.

At the end of the day, you are in business to make money. It is cash flow that will most influence your business. I am sure you will much better about having a business that is bringing in consistent revenue.

As a business owner, you wear many hats.  At first, there may be financial constraints but as soon as you can, seek to automate simple, low level, repetitive tasks.

For example, using email autoresponders to follow up with new prospects.  For more technical or skilled activities, look for someone that can perform those duties better than you can.

For example, I may be somewhat techy but it can be a time to learn new things, so I have a web guy that specializes in the area and does it much faster too. That frees up my time to devote to higher level activities in building my business.


It is not wise to outsource something you have no idea about. In that case, it will be difficult to guide the contractor or freelancer on the specific things you require. It can, therefore, be a costly mistake.

Make sure to support your relationships. This includes dates with your spouse, playing with the kids, Sunday lunch with parents.  It is important to schedule time with them.

 I understand that at times you will be in hustle mode and will have to reduce that time. Be that as it may, that hustle time must be short and fixed.

You must also discuss it and get an agreement with the different parties ( spouse and kids) so that they are part of the process.  It is easier for them to handle if they know rather than just being ignored or feel abandoned.

 When you take the time to explain to children what you are doing and why, they understand. Make sure not to break any promises. The last thing you want to do is lose the very reason you work so hard in your business. To provide a better life for your loved ones.

 Sometimes you need a change of scenery and routine to get your creative juices flowing again. One of Mentors Kate Mc Shea says that in planning for your business 12 month period, the first thing you should do is schedule your vacations.

Also, see them as a treat to yourself for your hard work and meeting your goals or regrouping to explode your business.

 I  used to go to the gym and I have some good and bad experiences. One time the trainer over trained me and caused more harm than help.  Nonetheless, I believe that being active is important for the healthy business owner.

Especially for those of us with an online business, we spend lots of time hunched over the computer.  I don’t need to tell you the danger of this. Many studies suggest physical inactivity can lead to joint pain, several health issues and early death. So when you take those regular breaks, use that time to get up and move around and stretch.

Also, don’t wait for the gym, look at your day and think about ways to become more active. For example, doing foot exercises while sitting can improve the circulation in your legs and feet. Another example would be parking the car and walking to all the shops when out on errands. 

There is no end to the benefits of exercise. The increase in optimism due to the release endorphins, pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters in the brain.  Regular exercise can provide a mental and physical boost handling the challenges of running a business.

 Many say get 8 hours, but that is not true. It is not about quantity, it is about the quality of sleep. Which would you prefer?

4 hours of solid, uninterrupted restful sleep or 8 hours of tossing or too much sleep and body feels sluggish. Your sleep requirement is not static and is affected by a number of factors including, diet, mental health, health issues, mattress, sleeping positions, stress level and so much more.  

 Also, you need to slow down  1 to 2 hours before bedtime so you can maximize your sleep time. This includes not eating just before bed or specifically heavy meals just before bed.

  Despite all that, you need to get enough quality sleep to restore and heal your body. The ultimate recharge. Quality sleep helps you maintain your energy levels, improve your mood, mental clarity and focus. It supports high performance and productivity.

 Do not allow your work life/business life to take over your whole life. You need something outside of work to stimulate you. I love interior decorating and DIY home projects.

I get so excited about seeing my ideas come to life. It is a creative outlet for me, totally separate and apart from work or business.

Finding enjoyment in something that you are passionate about can relieve stress and provide a space of peace.

 Hobbies help us boost our mental health and improve self-esteem, and they can also provide new social connections as well.

 Health is wealth is not just a saying. As I mentioned before, you have to keep your best asset in peak performance or you become a liability.  Being ill causes downtime, loss of productive time and even increase unexpected costs.

It’s nearly impossible to function well as a business owner or entrepreneur if you’re unhealthy. Not only does your physical health play a part in how you feel every day, but it can also affect your mental health as well.  It is difficult to make good decisions when you are not at your best. It affects your confidence.

 So it means drinking adequate water, watching what you eat and even getting the correct mix of vitamin supplements. The research has shown that the foods today are simply not as nutritious as the food  50 years ago. After making sure the food is not fake, you would need to eat 5 to 10 times the normal serving to get the basic amount of vitamins and minerals.

 In conclusion, these tips were based on how you can make small changes in your life and business to improve your entire well being. Thus allowing you to be more productive, profitable and healthy enough to enjoy your life.
