How are old you?
I used to dread that question and do everything to avoid giving an answer.
Now, it is quite different and I answer without hesitation.
Why? Partly because of what I am about to share with you in this blog.
What are you going to get from this blog post:
- The vital ingredient that must be present in your anti-ageing skincare regime
- Resources showing what are the best foods to get it and stimulate its production naturally in your body.
- These resources also have easy to follow recipes.
By now you have been bombarded with anti-ageing products from drinks to anti-wrinkle creams promising to fade lines and smooth folds yet many of you get disappointed when you look in the mirror and don’t see the expected change.
I know that a little piece of you dies each time that happens.
Let me put this into context.
Firstly the ageing process is real and natural. With the passing of years comes signs of ageing like forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet around the eyes and dark spots. There is no way to stop the ageing process.
However, we can do things that slow down the ageing process and allow us to age gracefully.
I am sure you have met women of advanced age such as the ’50s, 60s and ’70s and they could give any 30 years old and run for their money.
When I ask them how they maintain such great skin, they usually reply with three things:
- Watching what they ate (not prone to a lot of junk food)
- Using a simple yet powerful skin care regime ( yes products matter)
- Managing their stress levels.
In this blog post, I will be focusing on food in two ways:
- The foods that can give us the anti-ageing ingredient
- The foods that can help our bodies produce this anti-ageing miracle naturally.
Enough suspense right. What is this anti-ageing ingredient?
Believe it or not, it is collagen.
“Anti-aging products can slow down the ageing process by stimulating collagen production, fighting oxidizing agents — which damage DNA — and promoting skin peptide production that results in optimal protein functioning,” explains Anna Guanche, MD, dermatologist and owner of Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas, California.
Good health at the cellular level is crucial for ageing gracefully, says Laura Stix, a naturopathic doctor and clinical hypnotherapist. “Clinical nutrition is key,” she says.
She looks to big doses of supplements such as glutathione. “One interesting fact is research looking at how our foods and microRNA are actually altering our genetic expression, so we have the opportunity to make wise decisions on how we wish to have our health advance in a positive or negative way.”
In other words, eat better to age better!
What is collagen?
Collagen is an abundant protein found naturally in the body.
It gives the skin its texture and elasticity. Collagen has a structural role in bone and joints.
It is a major constituent of connective tissues such as ligaments, synovial fluid and the skin.
In time the production of collagen decreases in time in terms of both quantity and quality. The ability of the body to bounce back into shape decreases and hence we get the lines, wrinkles and folds.
Collagen supplement sales have been growing steadily at 30 percent, with approximate sales of $98 million in 2018 in the US Market.
The health benefits of collagen and more specifically the skin is not new. Ancient Chinese women used to use donkey skin to smoothen skin wrinkles.
There are also several studies that show when women ingested collagen supplements, they experienced significant improvements in their skin. Namely decreases wrinkles and fine lines. Also improvement movement.
Now collagen used to be injected but today many dermatologists recommend collagen in the forms of supplements and food.
Using the injections, the effect doesn’t last long and in many cases cause allergic reactions. In other cases, they have very little effect. Using topical sources have similar problems since the collagen may not be absorbed properly through the skin.
That is why your best bet is to get your collagen naturally and through food and supplements to fill in the gaps.
Collagen production requires more than just proteins which bring us to the first resource.
